What Is On-the-Job Training?
On-the-Job Training (OJT) is an opportunity for you as a Dutchess County employer in the public, private non-profit, or private sector to hire individuals who you would not otherwise hire because they lack some of the necessary skills required to succeed while reducing the related hiring and training costs.

OJT is an investment in your business. The costs include the time devoted by team members to increase the skills and ability of the new employee and the returns can be measured by the increased productivity of your business.

OJT is one of the best training methods because it is planned, organized, and conducted by you at your worksite. It is particularly appropriate for developing skills unique to an employee's job - especially jobs that are relatively easy to learn and require locally-owned equipment and facilities. Often times, OJT relates to the introduction of new technologies, introduction to new production or service procedures, workplace literacy, or other appropriate purposes identified by the Dutchess County Workforce Investment Board (DCWIB).

Some Common Methods of On-the-Job Training are:
 
  • Demonstration / instruction - showing the trainee how to do the job
  • Coaching - a more intensive method of training that involves a close working relationship between an experienced employee and the trainee
  • Job rotation - the trainee is given several jobs in succession to gain experience of a wide range of activities
  • Benefits to the Employer
    Cost savings - the expense of training a new employee are partially reimbursed by the DCWIB.

    Immediate assessment - managers or supervisors can assess progress over a period of time making it easier to identify a problem and intervene to resolve it quickly

    Tailored training - the program gives employers the control to design a training program that meets the needs of the business.

    Full-time employee - reimbursement for part of the participant’s wages during the training period, while having the services of a full-time employee.

    Benefits to the Employee
    Learn as they earn – OJT participants receive an income while they are learning in jobs that are matched to their aptitude, abilities, and desired occupational goals.

    Job coaching—mentoring relationships may develop leading to greater success for the new employee.

    Employment - participants will obtain training for new job skills and re-enter the workforce.
     

    Welcome On-the-Job Training to Your Company
    Agree to provide an OJT participant with the skills and training required to become competent in their new job. Through an OJT contract with the DCWIB you can be reimbursed for up to 50 percent of their wages to compensate for their training costs.

    The maximum reimbursement for a new OJT employee is based on the skill level of the job and content of the training. In determining the appropriate length of the contract, consideration will be given to the skill requirements of the occupation, the academic and occupational skill level of the participant and prior work experience.

    What Are the Program Requirements?
     
  • Potential job applicants must be pre-qualified for OJT through the Dutchess County One Stop System
  • Priority will be given to applications that meet our average earnings standard.
  • Training plans must be for job-specific knowledge and skills. (Ineligible OJT applications will include those seeking wage subsidies for such areas as customer service training, general computer skills or merchandise stocking).
  • An analysis of the major job requirements and related knowledge, skills, and abilities
  • Specific identification of a skills discrepancy between the skills the OJT candidate has and what the job requires must be made
  • Employers must match at least 50% of the OJT participant’s salary
  • An OJT contract may not exceed 26 weeks

  • The programs provided by this agency are partially funded by moneys received from the County of Dutchess and federal WIA funds
